Since inception in designIT, the floor joist calculator has become a well used design aid for the specification of hyJOIST and hySPAN floor systems.

The calculator is easy to use and allows designers (not necessarily having engineering qualifications) to take account of actual load and span arrangements to produce optimum designs without compromising safety or serviceability.  The design methodology is based upon AS1684.1-1999 updated to include AS/NZS 1170-2002 requirements.

Design capabilities include the following:
  • Design of floor joists supporting perpendicular load bearing walls including consideration of differential deflections that may be important where wall openings are involved.

  • Provides a means of checking the acceptability of web holes for hyJOIST that take account of actual load and support conditions for greater flexibility in location compared with tables.

  • Provides specification of proprietary hangers including required fixing detail.

  • Allows the full range of options for design of balcony cantilevers to be considered.
