Wiri Distribution Centre (New Zealand)

Case studies index

Location:Wiri, New Zealand

Size:3, 000 square metres

Built for the storage of LVL products - hySpan, hyJoist and hyPlank, the Wiri Distribution Centre is 3000 square metres and is constructed entirely from the products it houses.

With a footprint of 28 x 110 m, the building is spanned in the short direction by 14 portal frames spaced at 8.2 m centres.

Our aim is to deliver a prefabricated solution so simple to erect, that steel riggers can easily construct it first time

100% renewable plantation grown Radiata LVL and plywood are fabricated into the portal frame members, roof purlins and girts.

The portals span the full 28 metre width of the building with a 6.7 m eave height and an apex at 8 metres.

All the timber was pre-cut...everything fitted together nicely and made the job quite easy

To take advantage of the accuracy of prefabrication and to speed construction, every second section of roof framing was assembled on the ground and then erected. The assembled roof frames were successively lifted by crane and the rafters joined to the columns. Every other bay was then in-filled with purlins onto standardised connections.

The Wiri Distribution Centre is now filled to the rafters with rack after rack of laminated veneer lumber product and is a solid example of the advantages of LVL construction.
