Sulphur Storage Facility
Case studies index
Location:Port Adelaide, South Australia
Builder:Ahrens
Size:7, 500 square metres
While the portal frames of this sulphur storage facility in Port Adelaide are heavy galvanised steel, all purlins and girts were supplied in LVL.
As a material, sulphur provides challenges with not only corrosion, but the potential for explosion. The LVL purlins and girts were engineered for all the design requirements, and timber does not corrode in acidic environments.
Using Cadwork, the 3D model of the building allowed all purlins, girts etc, to be precision manufactured to length, with bolt holes also located for easy assembly. The speed and ease of construction matched steel purlins and girts, and the project achieved the added environmental benefit of storing around 36 tonnes of carbon.
