This article covers stage 1 of a 2 stage mushroom substrate plant. It is a fine example of how LVL can be used in corrosive environments.

The composting process in producing mushroom soil releases ammonia, which corrodes steel and significantly reduces its lifespan. Acidic environments generally preserve timber.

The choice of LVL and other glued engineered products such as plywood and I-beams, for buildings with highly corrosive conditions...is obvious because these wood based materials are largely unaffected by the acidic conditions

The benefits normally ascribed to steel construction: uniformity, structural reliability, strength and stiffness are all obtainable with an engineered timber solution. Clear spans of 30 metres with a 7 degree pitch were no problem for the LVL and plywood engineered portal construction.

Connections and assemblies are easy for rigging trades to assemble and erect on site, and the client found the speed and ease of construction comparable with steel.

The additional benefits of corrosion resistance and positive environmental impacts made the choice for timber a simple one.
